I admit
my first thought
as I sat inside the crowded room
was to count us
I only needed
five fingers to tally our faces

throughout the day
I admonished myself
for the constant need
to be one among many
until one of the tallied confided
that she had counted us all too.

She began writing poetry at the age of 12 to grapple with growing up in a low income community and to help her develop her identity as a young black girl in America.
