Hiding in plain sight

unable to move

not speaking above a whisper

so no one hears

the cryptic phrases

destined for a later time 

seeing everything

but holding it all in

believing I am whole

but holding my breath

waiting on a promise

to fill the emptiness

of knowing too much.

She began writing poetry at the age of 12 to grapple with growing up in a low income community and to help her develop her identity as a young black girl in America.
