I haven’t written anything in a few days, and then I read something that really touched me. I could feel it move from my mind to my heart and it lived inside of me for a short time. It almost felt like a butterfly dancing across my subconscious, and I realize that this is why I read and why I write. There is a place I can travel deep inside of me and it belongs to only me…..

She began writing poetry at the age of 12 to grapple with growing up in a low income community and to help her develop her identity as a young black girl in America. For the past 10 years, she has worked as an educator teaching at-risk youth in Washington State.
